steel planters

I knocked out a set of steel planter boxes for a local hotel. These ones were on castors, so I had to make a sub-frame to support the wheels. I've made quite a few planters in my day. The following pictures tell the story of this run.

1. 1x1x.125 mild steel tubing for the sub-frame.
2. and 3. Jigging and welding the sub-frame.
4. You mean I still have all that material to weld up?!
5. Gettin' er done... almost time for the castors.

1. Steady as she goes.
2. Lower assembly finished. Only six more to make a set. My back hurts.
3. Zipping up the box. I'm a friggin' genius.
4. Raw box awaits its dressing.
5. I welded up some cross members from that 3/8" stainless rod I had leftover from another project. Perfect fit for the left-overs. Stainless is sure expensive... save it where you can. These rods helped eliminate any bow in the box.

almost home

1. Aside from tigging the rods together to get the right lengths (my leftovers were a tad short), this whole project was zipped up with my Passport. Zingbang!

2. Yeah, we even finish the underside.

3. Home stretch.

4. New home.

Time time time. I've learned and reached the understanding that my business is all about the care and the finished product. I can sleep well and wake up feeling good about the job. Hard to get rich that way... strange world we live in.

Forced (chemical) dark patina, then applied clear coat. Lots of work in those two steps alone.

Nice boxes are they treated with anything? Still looked like raw steel when finished. Looks like the inside of a hotel I stayed at while in Alabama.
