Twice a year I spread fertilizer and weed killer on the home turf. It isn't difficult and probably good exercise, but as I get older the lawn seems to have expanded.
I dismounted the handle by removing (4) 1/4-20 bolts and nuts, and and reusing the same hardware, attached the spreader arms to 1" x 1" angle welded to a 1/8" plate at about a 54 deg angle with 1 1/4 inch square tubing at 45 deg to the tow bar. On the hitch end I made a clevis from two pieces of 3/8" plate drilled at 5/8 for a hitch pin to the tractor and welded to the 1 1/4" tubing. The length of the tongue is 24".
It tows easily and spreads more evenly than under human power because the tractor doesn't get tired and runs at one speed, uphill or down. For the tight spaces around the yard I simply re-attach the handle and manually spread.
This was a simple project, made with left over stock from a band saw stand. By the way, I did grind the edges off of the 1/8" mounting plate.
