  • Paint Recommendations

With all the welding going here, someone has to have figured out paint by now and I need some help with selecting the right paint for my latest project.

I’ve just about completed my gate entrance. It’s basically an oilfield pipe rail fence. I’ve got the prep work down – I’ll sandblast it with my 350lb Schmidt run by my 175cfm Ingersoll-Rand air compressor. But selecting paint has always given me fits.

For my last couple of trailer projects, I’ve purchased “Nason” brand single stage enamel paint. I believe it’s made by Dupont and uses your typical automotive hardner and reducer. It runs me $125 a gallon (including the hardner and some reducer), but is an excellent paint that stands up to UV rays and is comparative to automotive paint.

For indoor projects, I’ll use whatever cheap enamel paint I can find. Rustoleum, Anchor, or if I’m painting it CAT yellow, I’ll get the paint from the local CAT dealer (~$30/gal).

Back to the gate entrance - I want something comparative to a good automotive paint that will give me a good 10+ years. I also want to get it in a “chassis black” which is similar to satin or about a 30% gloss. It’s going to take about 3 gallons or so to paint this thing and at $125 a gallon, it will eat my budget.

I’m leaning towards going to my local Kelly Moore or Sherman Williams and see what I can get there. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

    Thanks.

Valspar is making synthetic enamels and a catalyst to go with them. Its sold by Tractor supply and the like. Sprays well, available in gloss, semi gloss, satin, etc. Nice durable paint.

Otherwise Hawthorne makes industrial Acrylic Enamel for automotive use. Prices are about 62.00 a gallon including hardener and reducer. Visit them at www.paintforcars.com

Ive use both of these with good results.

generally nason single stage enamel is not bad paint, but it tends to fade bad. now you can go to single stage urethane nason which will hold up alot longer, make sure the prep is good. i like using dupont veri prime to etch the bare metal, some people love epoxy over etch. just make sure you use a proper breathing resp. cause of the iso in the urethane. oh yea you didnt say how big the gate was, but good hvlp gun with like a 1.2 or 1.3 tip will reduce paint usage..tony

        Vinylast

I have heard that Vinylast works the best for outdoor ornamental design work., it runs about $90 a gallon has a reel nice semi gloss black. You can get it from Kings.

I have yet to use a urethane/epoxy paint. Will "white metal" be okay for the prep or would I still need to etch the metal with a special primer? One of the other problems I'm running into is that Nason and other good paints aren't available in satin or semi-gloss black. Almost all automotive paints are high gloss.

The gate is 15'x6' and I'll be using my Sata with a 1.4 tip.

Dupont do a satin binder for their paints in which you substitute for the gloss ones. not sure about the other manufacturers you list cos we don't get them over here but might be worth talking to a local car sprayshop.

your sata, is it hvlp? im sure it is, but you never know, 3 gallons is alot of paint, not sure of the design...i really dont know anything about white metal, but with all the work going into this project i would not be cheap on the paint, stripping it will suck later when it peels. try a post in this auto body group, a lot of really nice people...tony

I need to paint the gate and the surrounding pipe fence.

                  Gate - 15'x6'
                  Gate Posts - 6" pipe 15' tall with a 21' overhead brace
Pipe Fence - 56' of pipe fence, 57" tall with 6 rails (4" post and 2 3/8" pipe rails)

So, I'm guessing around 3 gallons and the Sata is an HVLP gun.
