finished my 3 trucks

well i finaly finished up my 3 trucks for sale. took for ever it seems but they are ready to go. the wife is planing to hit the flea market this weekend and its been hard to get things ready as she just started a new job wich makes me babby sitter all day and by the time she gets home there is not too much left of me. he is getting bigger and wanting picked up a lot and its playing heck on me.
i made one blue, one red, and one yellow.
first pic is all 3 the next pic's are front and back of each as they are all a lil diferent.
if the trucks sell this weekend i might make a flame truck for the fallowing week.
i'm also trying to get a flame only mail box done but time is short and i have a few other steel projects i want to get made. so maybee i can get them built wile waiting on paint layers to dry. if 2 of the trucks sell im getting a air brush kit for the next set.

only drawback is it was prity time consuming. the blue and yellow ones were about 8-10 Hrs each and the red one was like 3.5 Hrs.
i tend to get caried away adding neat lil details making it to complicated, i realy cant help it. its just the way i am i like to make stuff as nice as i can even when i'm trying to make it simple.
the red truck was a purpusfull forced atempt at simplifying it to make it more sellable at a decent time to $$ ratio. but i just couldnt leave it plane with just a flat bed so i added the POW*MIA to the door's and a bumper to the back but still stayed under 4 Hrs so i was happy with that.
now to see what kinde of $$ i can get out of them
the wife said she wants to get $125 for them but i thought $80 would make me happy so we shall see what they go or dont go for.
i think i need to switch to a cheaper paint. i always use krylon as its always been realy good paint for my projects but they were all steel, this being wood i think the wally world paint would work just as well as it dosent have to fight rust. switching paint would save me about $15 per truck wich would help keep the sail price down and still alow me some $$ for my time. only thing i know for shour is they were fun to make.

you should not have any trolble geting that out of them. i know what you mean about geting to much time in the projects i stand back and look at them and just keep adding things to them. good luck. they do look nice

its funny how you can just keep getting idea's as they progress. i actualy cut up some wood into small beams and a stack 2X6's to scale i was going to stain and add to the back of the red truck to make it look like it was carrying a load of lumber, and on the lathe i made a small scale milk jug (the old style they used to diliver) to load up a truck,but decided i better not keep adding. oh well there is always the next one right.
adding the rivets to the tires to look like lug nuts was prity neat looking too and not much time or expense involved eather so i will likely do that again.
after i get my wood lath all set up i can use it to make the wheels and that will save a lot of time also i think. its prity time consuming to cut them out with a scrool saw one at a time then cut treads into them again 1 at a time. if i lathed a hole row at a time i could just run the 4.5" grinder down the hole thing and cut all the treads at once then cut the tires off as needed.
i also built them 1 at a time insted of all 3 at the same time. doing 3 at the same time would be faster also but the blue one was the first one i have ever made so i was still working out how to put it togather and what would work where. after it i again made a few changes on the yellow one to try to reduce the time and again with the red one. now that i have a good idea on some easyer and faster methods the next set should go faster still. i would realy like to get the time down and still keep the quality up so i can get more made and be able to bring down the $$ a bit. keeping in mind i have about $35 in matereals per truck i would like to get the build time down so i could sell them at $60. maybee $80 compleated and $60 for a do it yorself kit to do with a grand son when he comes by or some thing like that. i'm going to get the next one cut and ready to go and have my 7 year old build it with me, see how it goes and make shore i have a good parts list assembled for the DIY kit. i think that would be a cool idea.

I did the same thing with a dump trailer. We built one then added up all the material and discoverd for about $1500 more dollars I could have bought one. I'm sure I had that much labor in it. Oh well, I think we do it because we can

heck i'm suprised you were able to build the dump trailor for less than it would have been to buy it. but glad you did.

Looks like you should be able to sell them pretty quick. Now all you have to do is make up some jigs and templates to start putting them out production line style. And you guys are right "we do cause we can". Dave

i got 26 pages i think none were missing or out of order so i suspect they are all there . i just been realy buisy with the wifes new job.
