Hey my name is jason and im new to this site. Im very passionate about welding mainly becuase i learn something new everyday. I have a feeling that I will never stop learning in the welding trade one way or another. My question to all you pipe welders out there ... is what are the variables in the field ... things like like gap and land and arc force ... I just went through my level B welding and i was welding schd 40 pipe with a 1/8 gap in the vertical up possition 3G and land and couldnt get the hang of it ... i have a feeling it had to do with my arc force cranked up to 100 % but my insturctor insisted i leave it at 100 % it wasnt untill i seen someone else weld with really nice penetration and i asked him ... how did you do that /? he replied i have my arc force at 40 or 50 % ... if anyone has any tips on welding pipe i would be interested to know ... im also looking for work in northern bc ... if anyone knows whats going on up there hit me back on that too ... keep your hood down

I need to know ,what machine what rod what gap how much land what's the diameter of the pipe. Tell your instructor to take his 100% an shove it . Everyone see's the puddle different and if he's telling you to leave it at 100 he's wrong . You have to figure out what works best for you .I have a pipe pro 304 that has all the bells and whistles( which I've retired and purchased a lincoln pipeliner 200d which will weld circles around the pipe proand it has none of that fancy junk) I pipeline and fab pipe and I've come to the relization that I don;t think my arc force works the way it's supposed to .I leave it at 70% and leave it there for everything. I have tryed other brands and other pipe pro's and they're all the same. So my advice to you is watch everyone you can and take a little from each guy / girl and incorperated it in to what you do because everyone is different. Oh yeah I almost forgot use both left and right hands believe me you will thank me someday. Just my opinion. Jef

Ya i kinda figured ... cus when i got my instructor to give me a demo it looked like my welds did when i first started welding ... Dont get me wrong we still demand quality out of our welds but i know when im being had and feel like i have waisted a majority of my schooling becuase of it. some of out tests are different in canda but the CSA ( Canadian Standards Act ) follows really closly with the AWS and b 51 and so on. when i weld with both hands you mean put the stinger in my left hand if it were normally to be in my right ?
