check out the local dump or tranfer station. All kinds of things thrown away. old bed frames [angle iron] are cool to play with, and free. That is if you don't mind getting in a dumpster

With the price of scrap these days, they don't let people dive the dumpster anymore - at least not where I live.

Thats true they have become more regulated, especially if they have designated metal bins, but in some rural towns you can still get stuff. cities might be worse. i live near a resort and work for the electric utility. I have often found metal bed frames sticking out of the dumpters around buildings. Along with new fishing poles..even new beach chairs. .ha ha ha. People on vacation or have condos will throw out anything.

              scrap metal

I was going to suggest the same thing as terry welds, but another idea is to check with local heating and a/c companies. Alot of the air handlers are shipped in a steel framed crate. One more thing to mention, for poor guys' like me there is no such thing as scrap metal. It's just a pile of material you haven't used yet.

If you have a farming area near. Old fence rows with junked out machinery is an excellent source. Talk to the farmer first.

Like beamwalker, but I just got into construction, LOT of small scrap from new buildings being built or refurbished. Check out the local large welding companies. they save all their scrap, but when it's time to clean up, they throw the smaller stuff away. Also get scrap at metal recycling places.

Try checking with your local trades school or high school welding class. Kids are notoriously wasteful and scraps build up pretty fast. (At least at my school) They may be willing to sell it cheap or even give it away. It certainly worth a shot.
