So a friend of mine calls and said his Wife bought him a Husky Super Moto bike for Christmas, but the exhaust is cracked and was wondering if I could weld it. It is stainless, so we pulled it apart and I TIGed it up. Turned out decent I think.

how's it going, the material is titainium. Ican tell by the color of the bead. the weld looks good and all but it's not. it will hold for awhile and crack riht beside the weld. i've welded lots of four stroke ti exhausts for guys ice racing up here . the only way to weld that is in a chamber. when you finish welding ti should have a mirror finish to it if it was shielded correctly. hope that helps. i admire you for trying to weld it and doing such a good job. If you wind repairing it again for him, build a chamber with a card board box and some tape with a piece of plastic or glass to see through, or just keep Ar flowing into the box while you weld. Not very scientific but it has been done in a pinch. The boxed in area only needs to give enough room for you to manuver in and seal up the area to be welded in if you can purge the pipe before hand. I first learned this from Wyatt Swaim, who runs the Tig Depot site, at a seminar a few years ago. Good Luck, Jeff

If it is Ti. it will crack but I think it is Stainless

have a closer look at the pics, all the factory welds were clearly made under atmospheric conditions with inferior shielding compared to the tig repair- it's not Ti.

FWIW titanium can be welded without a chamber- a trailing shield fitted to the torch (as well as a purge) will work fine for some applications.

The stock welds look like they are MIG welds, so that is why I figured it was stainless. Is there a way to tell the difference between the two?

titanium has almost half the density of stainless steels. if you pick up an exhaust made of titanium it would be spookily light.

Factory down the street welded Ti in the air for years. My boss did it and he said they cut their own filler by shearing little strips.

Hit with a grinder- Ti makes super bright white sparks.

pete, the bike is a husqvarna super motard which comes with ti exhaust (at least here in canada. pro circuit also makes ti exhaust all of the mig welds are made in atmosphere for whatever reason (probably to keep costs down and speed up prduction . so that is why i think it's ti. Jef

I've been roadracing for quite a few years and replaced/repaired many exhaust systems. When a mfg. says they have a "TI" system, it usually means the exhaust canister and maybe the internals of the chamber are TI, the rest is usually stainless.

As someone else mentioned, hit it with a grinder and see if it sparks white (TI) or yellow (stainless).

Nice looking welds.

I just bought a used Dialarc HF and hope to be making some nice looking stainless beads like that soon.
