Isn't that what a Super Moto bike is, dirt bike with street tires and big brakes? Mabey I am calling it the wrong thing.

      My Powerstroke is a '97.

      Thanks for looking.

Actually the term is " Super Motard " or one word " Supermotard ".

Dirt bikes with street tires raced on road. Take the knobbie off a dirt bike and put on a good pair of street treads and you can get into racing rather cheaply.

Here is a quote from a good web page on the topic.

Even with only a change from knobbies to street tires, Yamaha's YZ250 motocross bike makes a great Supermotard mount.

HONDA calls it what it was at the beginning ...

TOKYO, Japan, March 16, 2005 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced the introduction of the XR400 Motard, a Super Motard-style* sport bike equipped with an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 400 cc, OHC, 4-stroke engine and 17" on-road front and rear tires. The XR400 Motard goes on sale in Japan on Tuesday, March 29.
Introducing the Honda brand: These are Honda's thoughts on people, business, and activities since its founding to the present and into the future.

I guess the AMA had an issue with " tard " being somewhere in the name.

It all started out as Super Motard before AMA even recognized it as a class.

Oh well ... the AMA has gone " PC " ( Politically Correct )

Peersonally I am not a member of the " PC " crowd. Guess I am too old!

Actually there are tons of SuperMOTARD sites around ....

          Super Motard since 1970 http://www.bikez.com/category/index.php?category=8

It's an interesting riding sport .... taking a dirt bike and racing it on asphalt.

I thought I heard Motard and Moto, but didn't want to sound like a retard if it was wrong. Thanks for clearing it up.

Whelp, no being in moto-x since '83(woods riding only till a few yrs ago) and never heard of that Honda scoot, but that isn't supprizing, when I was stationed over there in the early '60s seems Joe would create a new scoot every mo. I assumed it was an acronym for Super Moto-X since it is about half MX, thanks for clearing up the question, but I really like the sport unforunately not much TV coverage.

It's not just Honda ... I think the only maker not building a Supermotard bike would be Harley Davidson ( no surprise here - if they are smart they wont even attempt one, as it surely would not do well - think of thier attemps at motocross in the 1970's ) ... even Suzuki has an offering in thier 400 cc line. My brother has one of these, it's a really fun bike to ride. Personally I ride a DL-650, it's a hybrid street/off road bike leaning more to street riding. Ducati makes one.

This all started out with a few riders putting road tires on dirt bikes, once it was seen as becoming a big thing the bike manufacturers started building motoard ready bikes.

any idea how long they last before failing? (probably just until the warrenty expires )

Super moto is that new fangled racing hybrid - half dirt, half street with racers from all walks: Motocross, gp, heck probably even trials riders. It's kind of answering the question of who the best rider is overall.
