    • Hey Guys,
CrackerJack sounds like nice digs. There better be some pics up SOON!
      James,
No problem with the questions. Were down about as deep as we can go. Ya see once you get about 2 feet down you hit shale. Some spots are better than others.

          • Jack,
If you buy the building materials as a package, most dealers such as Morton will include a set of plans that will meet your needs. I did R19 on the sidewalls with fiberglass batts...filled the 6" "pole" cavity and R40 in the ceiling with blown in cellulose.
Miller 251...sold the spoolgun to DiverBill.
            Miller DialArc 250
            Lincoln PrecisionTig 275
            Hypertherm 900 plasma cutter
            Bridgeport "J" head mill...tooled up
            Jet 14 X 40 lathe...ditto
South Bend 9" lathe...yeah, got the change gears too
            Logan 7" shaper
            Ellis 3000 band saw
            Hossfeld bender w/shopbuilt hyd.
            Victor Journeyman torch and gauges
3 Gerstner boxes of mostly Starrett tools
            Lots of dust bunnies
            Too small of a shop at 40 X 59.

              • The shop has been up 11 years now, but at the time Gillette, WY had a building code much more stringent than the National code. The plans that Morton sent were accepted by the city with no hassles...and that was with a building inspection office that had a definate dislike for my gen. contractor. So you should be good to go with whatever the supplier ships for your particular area. They use the plans as an added incentive to sign off on the material package as they realize that it will save you some bucks over having to have them drawn up locally.

You might want to get a soil inspection done prior to ordering plans, package, etc. just to see if there may be any problems that will need to be addressed.

                • Hey guys,
                  Jack,
I bought my building from National Barn out of Hanover P.A. (717) 637-0004.
I bought the building and they were supposed to install it, but they got backed up so I hired a local guy that builds pole barns for a living. I used that new fangeled double bubble insulation. They told me that it's rated at R 11 but was not convinced. The one thing that I like about it is it STOPS the wind! I live in an area that gets alot of wind and that was a big concern and this stuff takes care of that. We were at -5 deg F yesterday and had a strong west wind and the shop was nice and warm. I use a coal stocker stove for heat. (75,000 BTU)
I would make sure you get pole protecters for your poles. I would not build a ploe barn without pole protecters. Look back at the pics you'll see what I mean.
                  Good luck,

                  • Looks very good, two questions I have for you. That heater/stove, does it require any ducting ? Is it right behind it ? Is that bench grinder stand the one from harbor freight, if not where did you get it from?

Thanks. The stove is direct vented. (Staight out the wall behing the stove) The Grinder stand is one that I build. Same type I built for the 12" disk sander.

Think of large, thick mil, close fitting industrial trash bags and you'll have the concept of pole protector down to a science.
