Ok. Im wondering why some one with little or no experience goes to welding school or takes classes and while there tries to challange the instructors knowledge. I mean is it really that hard to teach a old dog new tricks?
Nice post. I can't think of anything to say except that I am so glad you brought this up. I can't tell you how many times I have come across this in my years in the field and now I think I need to go take several shots of Cuervo. Thanks.

Thats right fishy..very true.Bottom line is Im sure those that are in school or taking classes can identify with the thread. People like that can compromise others learning. This is a serious topic I feel so only serious apply.Other than that click on to the *** doing what it does best.... gimme me a break

yea, what about the students that miss class a lot, or want to leave early, ect. . . and then the teacher has to go back over lessons to get those cought up when we could have been fearther along in the class
yes, it is fustrating
It's been 10 years since I took SMAW lessons in a class, but back then we had a "3 absences and you fail" attendance policy. It's usually the young-ins who skip post secondary classes or want to end early, the older students realize they're paying for the class or need to know whats being taught and want their money's worth as such. That you have an older student with this "I know more than you" attitude isn't usually the case.

Absolutely. In my opinion the instructor should let it be understood that those playing "catch up" WILL have to do so after class on their time not class time.
Never should the class be stagnated by those that have things to do outside of the class.
its like that in my design and drawing class, all the spanish kids show up late or skip class and we have to listen to the lesson two or three times. Thank god after the teacher and I finish building the set after school the class is going to learn about wood working and then design projects then make them. I get to make my project out of metal and the teacher wants me to stay after school and teach him what I know and he will teach me what he knows. The class is capabile of so much more...he was talking to me about how if I could help him supervise the class could learn some welding but, he doesnt know because so many kids are missing the lessons and it wouldnt be too safe with everyone not knowing the safety stuff.
When I was in welding school in the early 1970’s it was my junior & senior year in high school. I don’t remember how many high schools were involved in this, but everybody was bussed to this centrally located trade center / school. For 3-hours of welding school each day. This class was run nothing like regular high school classes. The teacher was way into his sixties, and as about old school as it got. My second year there, (senior year) first day, four new black students were setting up front as this teacher was explaining to everybody how the class was going to be run. These 4-guys wouldn’t settle down or be quiet. I thought to myself great wonder how long this is going to last, just about that time, the teacher said, “ you four get your asses up, and get out”! I thought ummmm wonder how long until he has to eat those words. Never seen those 4-guys again. I spent 2-years with this teacher, he ruled with an iron fist! His way or the highway!

Now thats the way it should be.The teacher teach the student gets taught
It is usually pretty easy to tell who is serious and who is not in a class setting. Those with a good atitude and a serious interest are who the class is really for. Unfortunately, there are those that take the class because they can or have to rather than because they really want to.
One comment I would make about learning a skill like welding is that at times it is very difficult to convey a concept so that the student understands it. This has happened to me on occasion. It is nobodys fault but this can slow things down a little. When this has happened I have stayed late and talked with the instructor after class to make certain that I am understanding what they are teaching.

Some times it's the teacher not the students that make a class a waste of time.
When I attended vocational welding school in Miami back in the 80's The Upholstery shop next door got a 40' trailer load of aftermarket van seats, They must have been donated because they were all broken. I was working on my 5G pipe welds until I was called over to repair these seats. Keep in mind this was an evening class after I worked all day, I welded on these seats, fabricated missing parts, modified the designs to prevent them form breaking again for 5 days 4 hours each day, no pipe welding just these stupid seats. the sixth day I went to the teacher and said "I'll teach some of the new guys how to do this so I can get back to pipe welding" I was told "no you are doing a good job keep at it" I welded for about another hour, getting more pissed until I could no longer contain myself. I asked again about teaching someone else then told him to go make love to himself! Went to the office and filed a complaint. I later found out that he was making money for repairing the seats.
Wow! I have never been so sure of getting ambushed, but here I go. This is in regards to the original post and it is quite possible I have misunderstood the post; However, as an instructor (Physics and Math) I love students that challange the instuctor. I believe that it makes a better professor and better learning environment for the entire class.
I truley believe that there is always a better way, and I can point out a few famous scientist that have proved it , i.e. Galileo,Euler,Wronskien, Copernicus, Einstien, Planck, Oppenhiemer....
********LEGAL DISCLAIMER****************
I do not include the degenerate *ssholes that do not care and are there to cause trouble. I only include the students that try, but do not belive the instructor( at least at first) is correct.
If the instructor is skilled and sure of themselves, they will have no problem proving their position.
I love the fact that students care enough to ask questions, and some can even challange my understanding of the subject. However I have always been confident and humble enough to answer the student to the best of my ability and on ocassion have had to tell the student I will have to get back with them. I have a deep personal belief that an instructor/professor that thinks he knows it all, knows nothing.
Again this is for the serious student and as for the rest.. Here is your F, and I hope I will see you next semester,... thanks for your financial support.
