Pros & Cons of Leasing vs. Owning your tanks

Hey Coalsmoke, if you mean you're moving to AB then I'll put in another vote for Oxypro. I've bought all my bottles in Edmonton and even swapped out a few in Calgary with no hassle.

Didnt realize it was that many ft^3. I may have to go back and buy a 20lb cylinder so I dont have to use C-25 on everything.

bjfab, i appreciate the tip. thanks. I'm actually on the mainland, but I looked up the oxypro website and they seem to be alberta only. I'll be moving in 2-3 years, so for now I am doing the rental thing to keep things simple for the move, but once I set up my shop, I agree that the way to go will be to own the bottles, especially with the bottles like argon and CO2 that I might not use very often. I was paying $85/year for rental of a 244 and 60 / fill of oxygen for that bottle. Now I am getting a year rental for $50 and $18 for a fill. I am shaking my head wondering why I was paying so much before. Dandimand tipped me off that I was getting gouged, so I shopped around, face to face, and started talking about figures upwards of 4000-5000cubic feet of oxygen a year, and got a great deal, or at least a lot better deal than before.

I just bought a 244 size bottle of c25 here. It was approximately $400 plus tax. I also own a couple of O2 and acet. bottles. They are purchased through OxyPro and are on an exchange basis. Basically it works out that three years of rent/lease will buy the bottles. Some of them I have had for fifteen years and was not using much volume of gases because of doing mostly mechanical work. More welding work now and so more volume is being used. It might be worth checking out if there is a Oxypro dealer on the island.

useualy long term is considerd lease as in years 1+ would be lease and generaly less expensive as its long term, rental would be short term like by the month so more expensive as they want there $$ fast as you will be done with it soon. although it can just depend on how the local guy wants to word it.

i think a distinction should also be made between leasing and renting. I don't know what the difference is, but one was going to cost me more money, so I went with the cheaper of the two. I think the lease was more and maybe on a per month basis, like $12 per month or rent the bottle for $50 for a year IIRC.

ld not find an real advantage to owning them.
I prefer to let the supplier be responsible for maintaining cylinders.

I've never been responsible for maintenance on any owner bottle. I can swap my owner bottles anytime, anywhere. Aren't you tied in to the lease holder for refills?
The only time I believe in lease or rental bottles is for temporary increases in demand.
My local welding supplys have had several regime changes over the years, some good some bad, I'd hate to be tied into one supplier when the new manager decides that I've been getting to good of a break on pricing.

however, if that includes buying the cylinder, then thats not bad. To buy 244 cu ft bottles here, its about $500 Cad or about $400USD

Just so you know i traded out my oxygen bottle today. $15 and change for the fill. The bottle is a 120. Mine are 15 yr lease from Linnweld
