  • My old Miller BlueStar 2e had the same gas tank and muffler set up. There was a thin metal heat shield between the two, but the tank still got pretty hot. My TB302G is bit more safe.

Hey Jeff I think you just touched on a sore subject this is the only real problem with these older machines. I serviced it at intervals recomended broke aluminum casing once tightening large center bolt that holds center plunger down Then the self locking center bolt at bottom of valve plate came off and fell into cylinder before I could shut it down blew top of head off cost couple thous. to repair runs good now 1 yr later I will service it alot less now. Thats why I love the idea of the new ones seperate from the motor but for compartment type set up cant fuel it up with tank on top as well as oil filters check out new ones even ouy of truck very difficult to get at filters I dont think Miller is going to sell to many of these until they address accessabilty of service componets.

      • Yep, they aren't really a low maintenance machine, but you can do most anything with one.

        • My take is that if you are having to regularly refuel your welding machine in the middle of the work day you are using the wrong class of machine.
On machines intended to work hard all day, regularly, the manufacturers put a fuel tank on that will run the machine for a shift and many times a lot more than one.

They do now. That has not always been the case. OUr Vantage 400 has a 15 gallon tank, and the fuel guage hits empty when it is 12 gallons down. In our usage, it seems to burn about .75 gallons per hour. This implies it will run all day even if you work a double shift.

            • It's too bad we all couldn't get what we want. Some of us had to use what we were told to use, some of us had to use whatever we could get our hands on.

Found these pictures posted by "Buddy" on the other message board Sunday:

Brings back the memories (not all good).

Generally would go about 2 - 3 hours between fillups. Not all of us were born with an SA200, we had to make do with what we had.

It's been the case since the late 1950's.
Anything that has to be refueled during the day, regularly, isn't the proper machine for regular all day use.

that's pretty good considering the size of the machine.

Those Commander 500's of mine will use 3/4 of a gallon per hour running 300-350 amps at 60% duty cycle. They have the 3 cylinder deutz engines. They also have a 25 gallon fuel tank, I don't have to fill up every day

The big advantage of a diesel engine is it tends to use only the fuel necessary to do the work required. My trailblazers would all use close to or over one gallon/hour turned to maximum, and the Hobart (four cylinder Ford industrial engine) would use close to 2 gallons/hour (~20 gallon tank).

well, I'm thinking he has had a good long while to post them. He could have air-mailed them to someone with a scanner by now, and had them put it up.

I purposely bolted down the cable rack I put on my welding trailer because I wanted to make a set of reels for it, but hadn't finished researching it. I knew I didn't want cable reels with electrical connections because of the maintenance issue. I also wanted the electric, act/oxy, and welding reels to be the same size. Yours are the closest I've found to what I'm going to do.
