And that's just for starters. Your looking at potentially trashing all the front end parts of your gun if you do that for too long. Also, whatever you are welding will not only look like crap, but will be welded that way as well. I think the pertinent rebuttle question is WHY on earth would you want to weld like that? Do tell grasshopper.

Go ahead and try it. On some junk and with a wasted contact tip. If you have any sense it will only take about .8 seconds until you'll never want to do it again. What a mess. Proper gas selection and flow are critical to quality mig welds. Nothing as irritating as forgetting to turn the gas on and starting your welding day by having to grind out porosity.

What's worse is forgetting to turn off the gas. I did that last week. Came back the next day and the tank was empty. :-( Now I put up a huge sign that will hopefully remind me in the future.

I dont think he desires to weld that way, he's just young and curious. I think in an earlyer post he mentioned that he is only 13 years old.

Basicly what would happen is there would be no seilding gas to protect the molten metal so it would rapidly oxidize and turn to slag. In other words the metal would burn. The flux on stick welding also is used to keep oxygen away from the molten metal.
