  • Mig Liner Question

I had a customer ask me a question about replacing his liner that I wasn't sure how to answer so I figured I'd consult the hive mind. He has an old profax lead and a liner that everything matches up but the heatshrink on the machine end binds up when it goes in. He wanted to know if it would be an issue to cut the heat shrink off and install as normal. I've kinda circled myself into a corner thinking that it could be fine or it could be a problem. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Show us some pics. if possible. I have done this on some older units took a razer blade and cut it off.
    Unit ran fine.

I don't have access to the liner or lead currently...I'm sure its rolling around ol' boy's truck somewhere in east GA at the moment. I was thinking the same thing with just skinning it off the monocoil and moving on...but I got to thinking and when I get to thinking, stuff tends to go squirrelly for me. I have to assume its on there for a reason and I couldn't come up with a good idea for the hypothetical reason...not a good enough reason to tell him to peel it off or leave it on. I was thinking if I had a spare liner for one of my machines, I'd giver 'er a go...unfortunately, I have over a dozen machines in line for repair and no time for experimenting...and apparently my spare liner box grew legs and wandered off into the ether. So that's a moot point right off the rip and an irritating issue all on its own.

Maybe give profax a call and see what they say. I’m with the doc here, need some pictures.

So, no pictures. Ol' boy found me while I was chasing squirrels and blackbirds at the hunting land...worked on his lead in the back of his truck on the side of a dirt road. I skinned the heat shrink wrap off the liner, pushed it up through the lead, and got to running puddles. I piled a ton of metal down without a single hiccup or binding issue...so, as the doc said, it was fine. I'd still like to know why its on there to begin with if it doesn't need to be.
