  • First SMAW Test Not Good ($125 330a/bp)

First SMAW test results aren't good.

    - Weld amps setting 100%
    - Polarity does not affect test results
    - Can weld only in high amperage range (bottom lever)
    - Used 3/32 and 1/8 7018 and 1/8 6010

In any polarity and low and medium welding amp range position I can drag the electrode across wire brushed mild steel and it just sparkles. Bigger sparkles in AC.

In any polarity and in the high weld amp range position I can lay down a bead with any of the three rods but they seem weak/anemic. In this range I'd think a 3/32 would light up light a lamp filament but it doesn't.

I verified input voltage is correct; 118/236v. Input amperage in run mode (switch on, not welding) 18/19a. Fan runs great. Will visually test for voltage leaks in unit tonight after dark.

Anyone have any initial thoughts what the problem might be. I've read what I think are the relevant SMAW parts of the manual and don't see anything I'm doing wrong but I don't have any experience with this machine so......

What voltage do you get across the ground and copper connectors on your remote when you sweep the amperage dial?

If I'm reading that Input wiring diagram correct the one that has 5 terminal studs and the jumper will placed to the far left.

The other that has 6 terminal studs and the jumpers will be placed to the far right .

        This would be for 230volt

          YAHOOOOOOO. It welds!

There is an Overload Control switch to the upper left of the faceplate. I can't find it in the manual. As soon as I flipped that to the on positions 830 lbs of steel and copper turned into a stick welder. :-) Weird behavior to be solved that way, but I'll take it.
