Power Requirements

Hi, my name is Doug and I am new to this form.

I am the VP and part owner of RND Automation in Sarasota, FL. We design and build custom machinery. I have the opportunity to purchase a used Miller Syncrowave 250 with cooler and torch. I have single-phase power in the shop but what size breaker will I need? And what size breaker can I get a way with? Most materials being welded will be between 16ga and ¼ steel.

The synch calls for 100A service.

I have a 200 amp service in my shop and run my syncrowave 250 on a 30 amp breaker. never had a problem blowing the breaker.

You will if you stand on it hard enough, it should pop a 30A breaker, if not you might have a problem with the breaker. The machine is rated for 96A @ 230 volts and I dont know if that includes the cooler. I have a 100A breaker powering mine. I'm sure the equipment is rated at max amp output with the cooling fans running.

I have the same machine and the size of the breaker depends on what you plan on welding. When I weld heavy Copper it really uses alot of power. Mine is on a 75amp breaker and I've tripped it a time or Two. When I'm welding steel I don't even get close to the top end of this machine.

I just have been welding thin material or should i say learning. I also have the built in cooler. maybe if I have to use full power it will trip the breaker.
