  • Onan Tachometer

Does anyone have any advice for a tachometer that can be used in my 16hp Onan? I have it running good, but I really don’t think the idle speed is correct and the manual suggested setting it using a tach.

If your Onan is on a welder, the best way to check RPM is to measure the frequency at the 120v utility outlet. You can buy a Kill-A-Watt meter at HF or HD, or wherever, and measure the frequency.

It is a Bobcat welder, that sounds like an easy way to do it. Thanks!!

Set for 62 hertz high idle no load, and 43 hertz at low idle.

Lawnmower shops have these neat little tachs that take a 12v input and have a wire that wraps around one of the spark plug wires. I have one, I can probably take a picture of it if you need me too. They’re not expensive and certainly less expensive than anything that says Onan on it.
