  • SMAW FCAW Electrode Equivalents

Reading manufacturers spec sheets to find this information is a research nightmare to me. So many counterintuitive details and caveats make me want to throw up my hands and go fishing.

(I hate an app that deletes most of you text when it publishes. grrrrrrrr Miller!!

    Continuing the first post:

So is there a chart or spreadsheet, etc. that one can use to get a quick glance at equivalent electrode/alloy combinations?

I.e.: 7018 and ESAB 7100 are both compatible with welding A572/50.

It would be nice to have a quick reference for many combinations to use when there are no customer specifications for which to use.

I used ESAB as an example only. A good reference would include many of the most popular electrodes.

LOL Thanks Bob. I’ll give that a whirl on some really rusty stuff.

On really rusty stuff you can try magic. Or the old, reliable hope and change. Seemed to work pretty well in the past.

            I’d probably try a 6010.

Gas salesmen are really good at their job.

There is an article about this topic somewhere on the web about but I can’t seem to find it. Basically it discusses all the myriad of available gasses and mixtures and that most of them aren’t needed; they’re the creation of gas supply companies used to increase sales.

I could read much of the article as the author seemed a bit unhinged, and was on a rant/tirade, but he did make some reasoned and valid points about a lot of the gas decision being unreasonably complex and in most cases unnecessary.

I think I remember what article you are referencing. Ed Craig?

Also remember that some of the best salesmen are those that make you think they are anti-salesman.
