  • Tungsten won’t tighten up

Switched over to .04 tungsten and can’t get it to tighten up in the torch. Tried multiple back caps and multiple collets and still loose. What should I check next?

Have you checked to see if you have the right size collet in there?

I do. That was the first thing I checked.

            It’s a syncrowave 250 with a 9 series torch. Don’t have this problem with 1/16.

Wedge style collet or split collet?

Have you tried putting a dial caliper on the tungsten shaft and actually see what it's size is?

It is a split type collet, tungsten measures .040.

OK have you tried sticking a pin gauge in the collect and check it for size? or tried other collects? or for that matter other tungsten of a different brand?

If all that checks out, one would have to assume your torch is worn out or at least the taper in that bore is now somehow over-sized....not many moving parts in there to go bad...

It too many things to go wrong there. Collet, collet body, back cap or torch body.

I feel your pain. I’ve had tungsten that would not get tight. I changed one of the above listed parts and it remediate the problem.

                          It’s frustrating, I know.

I found a wedge collet tucked away in my box and that seemed to fix the issue. Good thing I don’t use that small of tungsten often.

Good deal. Glad you got squared away. Chasing your tail on little issues like that is frustrating.
