  • 255 Wire Feed Speed Slow Then Fast

My new Millermatic is having feed problems. One thing I found is so consistent I need to ask if it’s supposed to be that way:

    - Main question is the 255 supposed to feed slower at the beginning of the weld?

My unit starts out slow for three to four seconds and then speeds up.

I can get this behavior visually by:
    - opening the door
    - releasing all tension on wire spool
    - removing the nozzle and contact tip
    - releasing the drive rollers
    - setting the machine to ~450 ipm

Always, when I pull the trigger there is a three to four second period the drive roll turns slowly and then speeds up. I see this same behavior with a normal configuration of the machine and initiation a weld pass. It doesn’t gradually speed up it jumps from the slow to fast.

It’s called “run in mode”. Not in the manual. I found it in the interface and Googled it for a definition. The slow time varies for different wire types; default is 50% (of what I don’t know). The machine kicks up to normal speed when the arc starts.

50% of the set wirefeed speed.

That's pretty common... my old Spoolmatic has it too.

I've certainly spent way too much time diagnosing features myself... it happens. Now you know for next time!

This app cuts off some content.

My “I lied” post above should have been followed by:

                - the 50% criteria actually goes to impedance.
                - the default for ‘run in’ is 60 inches per minute

Now in some of these machines you could turn off the slow start by turning off the machine, hit the gun trigger, and turn the machine on. Release the trigger after a couple seconds. Works on some but not all.

The 255 has a disable option in the Setup menu.
