  • Please help - looking for drill press

Hello - I've been looking online at drill presses for drilling half inch steel. I'm a bit confused because most of the best rated ones I see are WEN that have a minimum RPM of around 600. I've heard RPM needs to be slow is this not too high? Any help is really appreciated

    Thanks

I have a small benchtop WEN drill press, set at it's slowest speed of 600rpm. If I have to drill anything over 3/8", I use my variable speed mill. Do a search for drill speed charts and you'll see what's recommended for different materials and drill sizes.

The small benchtops run kinda fast for 1/2" holes in steel. I have 3 or 4 of them...Bob

Unless it’s a small part, it’ll be tricky to get a piece of 1/2” steel drilled nicely on a bench top drill press.

I've been toying with the idea of going 3 phase motor with VFD so I can set any speed I want on my drill press. My benchtop turns too fast at the slowest speed for thick steel too.

I bought a 550watt servo sewing machine motor for my 6" lathe. Then i bought an industrial sewing machine and needed a motor so now the lathe sits. They are like $115 on ebay. Speed dial from zero to super fast...Bob

550 watts is what, .73 hp? That's not bad.

Significantly cheaper than 3 phase and VFD.
