I think you over-estimate the number of people who could trouble-shoot and fix this issue.

From my perspective, it suggests a design flaw. If you can hand crank the tension enough to wear out the shaft, the tensioner should be weakened or the bushings on the shaft beefed up. It feels like a very chinesium like problem.
