I noticed your "just to mention a few" and figure you should be able to answer that question for us? Or is that a list of what you tried but never married?

I have that few and more, I have one XMT in my shop and just picked up a 2nd one for my weld rig. My rig is wired with a breaker box so if I’m at a location the has a 50 amp welding plug I can plug in and can power the rig up using there power without running either my Trailblazer 302 of my stand by 8K generator. My question was if anyone has powered one off there portable or generator.

Some of my folks ran 6010 off the XMT run from a 10kW generator. No issues, though they were only running about 130 amps on the electrode (attaching 1/4" brackets to some wall down south for hanging wire). I guess it probably depends on the generator and your power needs. They chose to run that instead of our Trailblazer 302 for some reason...

Thanks John, Thats what I wanted to know if anyone had ever ran on off of a Portable or generator with no problems. I agree that the higher the amps the more power would be needed. A lot of the time places I do work at have power at there location that I can run my rig off of. Then other times I have to run the 302. The 302 has 10,000 watts of power and I also have a standby that has 8,000. The other reason I was wondering is if I was on location welding off the 302 and had another person (welder) I could use the XMT off the 8,000 so we can both weld at the same time.

I am guessing that 8kw is running a 16hp engine? Not sure how much that would bog down. I had an XMT 304 that was a bit finicky on the power at a buddy's farm - the display wouldn't show the preset voltage when in VS feeder mode. It was an older XMT 304 and a newer XMT 304 worked fine, so no telling if it was due to age or design updates. I replaced the board capacitors on it but haven't tried it at the farm since. It sounds like something you could test out before trying it on the jobsite.

John, its a Generac 8000e, which I think is 420cc= 15 Hp?.. I have 2 XMT 304’s one I purchased back in the mid 80’s new so its got a few years on it and the newest one I just picked up the other day like new. One of the reasons for asking if anyone had tried running it on portable power was I have heard some can be finicky. I guess I dont like to be a Ginny pig when it comes to plugging in things when it doesn’t like to play well with others. I have ran a Lincoln LN-25 on the old one several times but most of the time its hooked to a 22A.The newest one I have I just hooked up my 12Vs extreme the other day and ran like a champ. When I get caught up on my work load I will give it a try on the 302 then the Generac and see how it works. Again thanks for your input.
