Just got two diodes and installed them last night, Quick touch to work clamp and got good spark. So it appears that was the problem. My concern is still why. The pictures show the overheated wire from the transformer to the voltage switch. Actually the contacts look clean and have a lot of grease on them which looks like burned contacts in the picture. If you can click and expand the bottom picture it shows where the two large copper wires were in contact and got overheated. I initially saw the burned insulation and then pulled the wires apart and tried to insure they were not making contact before starting troubleshooting. I was going to post this morning on suggestions on how to repair the insulation before installing the covers. Was curious if this issue might of been why the diodes failed. Any suggestions on the insulation issue?

More likely the shorted diodes caused the overcurrent. They do sometimes just die of old age.
