  • Welding certification. WPS PQR

This may sound like a dumb question but who requires welders to have certifications? Let's say like in a shop setting doing production work. Is it the engineers that design the end product being welded? Is it the welding shop that requires it? And where to WPS's and PQR's come into play? And who writes the WPS's and PQR's?

It's not a dumb question but it would take some typing to answer it. I'm really not in the mood for that.
So... check this forum out. But don't forget which one sent you there to do some reading.

      I agree with Noel.
Certification has become one of the most misunderstood things in the Welding World.
It has been prostituted beyond recognition when salesmen pass out Certificates to body shop employees who endured a 2 hour lecture.

Welding codes aswell as building codes are optional to use. It is the government usually the state / province that will require them to be used. Sometimes municipalities will change certain things and make their own code.

WPS - welding procedure specification. Basically details how a weld is to be made. Usually written by a welding engineer or someone with a extensive background in welding and QC

PQR - performance qualification record. Basically a ticket handed to a welder (weldor for franz) after successful completion of a weld test following a specific WPS. It allows the welder to weld joints to that wps

It’s common for a shop to give a weld test to “certify” a guy on particular process/project. Mostly to ensure they’re turning out stuff built to spec.

Wilvis we continue to share sufficiency of a commonly fractured language for you to know what an adjectival noun is and how to employ one.

That established, the US does not have a Red Book system, but does have a large population of testers looking to make a living. Certs begin when weldor qualifies for the job and expire upon completion of the job. Certs are the property of the company or man paying for the Cert. Upon completion of the job a Cert retains all the value of used toilet paper, and a paper copy must be retained in the job file.
Same job comes in the door 6 months later the weldor must certify to the job all over again.

We also have a wonderful prostituted system where kids are handed Certificates of Completion of weldor training programs. Said paper has no value beyond cost of printing, and alerting potential employers the kid has maxed out his student loan capability and must find a job to make his loan payments. We have one "school" here that exists on unemployables from the State Unemployment Office. They get taxpayer funds and max the kids out on student loans, hand them a Certificate of completion and walk him through the door to the adjacent snow pusher sweat shop. Because the kid gets hired to run a hot glue dispenser on snow pushers they get a bonus.
91 days after completing the school the kid is back at the Unemployment office in debt to his eyeballs.

Well Ive never worked in the states so I dont know how it works over there. But we both use the ASME code for pressure piping systems. Here each province has its own government body that regulates pressure welding and its own way of maintaining welding tickets. But it all follows ASME code, it has to. Usually its the same government body that regulates other public safety things like elevators, amusement park rides, etc. That's why I imagine each state has a similar government thing. Then there's stuctural code. Here we have CSA / CWB but you guys use AWS. The cwb code is very similar since its based off of the AWS code. We just had to feel special by having our own code I guess.
