    Its stronger
    Then try to bust it immediately by launching in a controlled environment. No surprises that way.
    Meanwhile find a spare. Or better yet fab a steel one.

    Thanks for the replies. I am going to tig it with 4043. I'll probably do short sections trying to keep it as cool as possible. As far as if it ain't broke....... well it will break definitely if I don't do anything because it has two grooves worn into it about half the thickness of the tube. I'm not so much worried about it breaking while it's going but more so at launch, that's where the biggest shock is. It is mainly a drag car with occasional street trips. I am going to tell him I have no idea how it will hold up. Try a few easier launches before really putting the hammer down. It is what it is.

    I've machined both 6061 and 7075. 7075 is a much harder alloy to machine in my experience. With heating up aluminum to the melting point you lose hardness, which means that it should be heat treated afterwords. And that applies to any aluminum alloy. If it were my project, I wouldn't do anything to the shaft. It goes back to the good old saying that if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

    I guessed at 6061 as I read some aftermarket are now offering shafts made from 7075 as if it is a new application. I consider 6061 to be a harder alloy once treated to T6. To me soft is 3003 or 5052. Just wondering what rod to use to have the best chance at survival.

    Not welding it together just filling two small grooves in the middle of the tube and sanding smooth.

    6061 is a real soft alloy in fact it's used as little as possible in aircraft. 2024 is the standard alloy for most airframe structures. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on 7075. 7075 is used for aircraft landing gear structures.

    98 camaro aluminum driveshaft alloy?

    Anyone know what alloy it is? Customer dropped off one today that the tube rubbed on the driveshaft loop and put a groove in it. I need to weld it up and sand smooth. Can't find the answer doing a quick search on the web. I know it may be out of balance when done and possibly weaker in the haz which I'll relay to the customer. My guess is 6061?
