  • 12vs wire feeder problems ?

    ok, i bought this machine use, but hardly, it looks brand new. i know looks don't mean much. i bought it about 4 months ago, and just got around to testing it out.

    I'm running the machine off a trailblazer 325 on cv voltage sensing DCEN
    wire- hobart febshield 21b .045

    now here is where it gets weird, the specs call for 15v and 105 in/min, this is just not possible. i kept getting burn back and eventually gave up.



    i brought the machine to my old weld shop teacher ( he runs AWS classes at night) and we tried it out on a syncrowave CC machine.
    -settings ended up on 20v and 350in/min!?!?! just to get it to run, could have bumped it up a tad more.

    it ran like we were running it DCEP but we for sure were not. ill include a picture, ton of spatter. looks disgusting.


    any ideas what could be wrong? could my feeder be defective? is there a way to calibrate the feed rate? im going nuts.

        Don't pay attention to what specs are listed on the box. There's nothing wrong with your feeder. It just needs to be set up for what your trying to run. This includes drive roll tension and wire spool tension.
        Set the feeder and your trailblazer to what works for the package you have. If your burning back, you turn up the wire feed speed, it's that simple.

          i understand what you're saying, thats what my old instructor said as well, but even then i couldn't seem to dial it in.

          running it off my trail blazer is near impossible to run a bead, no matter what it either burn back and melts the tip or its jabbing so hard it pushes my hand away. ill attach another picture. even when i can get the machine to not burn back or feed too fast, it doesn't fuse to either side of the plates I'm trying to weld.

          does anyone have a good starting point for .045 fabshield 21b ?

          trailblazer settings were voltage sensing wire feeder, and DCEN, on a side note, does it make a difference whether i plug the feeder into either of the two negative lugs?

              Should be set to flux core in the Contactor On section.

              Sure does. Work clamp lead should be connected to (+) and feeder connected to inner WIRE/TIG/GOUGE (-).

              Feeder should be set to CV and HI range.

                Your set up is not correct yet
                hows the gun liner? Your drive rolls, gun tip and liner are the correct size/style for the wire your running?
                ive ran the 12vs feeder quite a bit, off a big blue 400 diesel.
                We always ran dual shield wire. I remember 21-22v and 250-280 wire speed. I also remember 28-30v and 450 wire speed. Those ranges worked for .045 dual shield wire with 75/25 gas. Passed many UT doing full pen moment connection welds.
                If your gun is stabbing, you need more volts. If your burning back, you need less volts or something is not correct with your with your wire/drive set up/tension.

                  the gun is in good shape, like i said it was working pretty decent on a CC machine. I'm going to pull it out a little later and try it again, its very strange to me, as i don't really have a problem with setting up a regular mig welder. I'm going to try it again on my trailblazer, with a different ground lead.

                    one last question. i got the machine running great, but...

                    i can fun 4-5" and then it starts to jab and burns up the tip. I'm using an .045 tip with .045 wire, almost seems like the its getting held up in the tip?

                    I'm running a 10# spool of wire, so the spool sits off center in the machine, does that make a difference?

                    I'm thinking maybe the gun isn't is as good of shape as i thought it was and the liner could be bad?

                      Liners are inexpensive to replace.
                      Something else you can check is the inlet/outlet wire guides near the drive rolls. I've seen them with grooves wore into them and start creating feeding problems with the Miller feeders.

                        Or a little burr on the end of the liner snagging on the wire as it passes.
