  • Issues with SA 200 red-face

So I purchased a 1968 or 69 sa 200 F 163 Lincoln red-face Code: 6792 last year. Changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter and changed the oil bath filter. Other than that, that's all that machine needed. I used this machine maybe 20 times (80hrs) last year for small jobs. Since business was slow, I ended up just letting the machine sit for weeks and turning it on every other day of the week. Just a few weeks ago, I noticed that the machine does not want to spark while at "Auto Idle" but sparks when I switch it to "High idle". I also want to add that now the 7018 rods are burning too darn hot, seems like the slag wants to go ahead of the weld puddle now, and I have to end up increasing the ocvs (which burns too hot). Decreasing the ocvs will just make the 7018 and 6010 burn worse. Like I said, this machine works...No overheating, no black smoke, does not choke while welding, this machine is great...It's only the idle issue I'm having to deal with.
Not sure if it's an idle problem, but would like some ideas or solutions to this issue.

If yours has the electronic idle control you will need the IM-277 manual

I run a 1957 sa200 and had the same problem when you strike an arc do you get a pffffft noise from the generator? sorry for the non technical term also if you strike an arc at night have someone watch for flashing in the generator it sounds like you have a stuck brush or brushes on the large commutator in the welder take off the large band and make sure the brushes move freely in there holders this is why most sa200s you see have a canvas cover on them it seems like the smallest amount of moisture can do it good luck!

Not really, I only got what seemed like little sparks but no arc. I check the brushes and they seemed fine when I cleaned the large commutator with scotch Brite sander (will double check again).

I just tuned it up with the recommended specs and it sparks again, even in the lower ranges of my machine (which didn't use to do that btw) thanks for the info about watching out for the sparks at night, will definitely watch out for that.

when you check the brushes just make sure they move in their holders pull them away and make sure the spring can move them back I had to file mine a little to make them move freely all I will get when they stick is a very small spark and no response from the idle control if that doesn't work I would call bills welder repair 405-232-4799 he helped me figure mine out and was very pleasant to deal with

Make sure its idling 1000 rpm. 1500 high idle and stone the brushes for starters.

Mr. Bill passed on from this life a few years back. When you call now, ask for Kaye, his daughter. Very knowledgable and equally as pleasant.
