  • miller 250x hot start

I have seen several comments about the hot start and by passing a diode on the board when welding 16 gauge steel. several diode numbers have been mentioned. Kevin stated the serial number was needed to identify the proper board.

    Miller 250x

    ser # la222777
    Stock number 903769

if some one could tell me how to fix this problem I would much appreciate it.

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing..... but when my MM 251 started popping on every start I called Miller....Miller's tech person told me to take the hot start wire # 8 (yellow arrow ) or a # 79 wire off the contactor, It's helped in my case.

rspiger, on the unit you listed you would need to clip D-1 diode on the control board to disable the hot-start. It would be located right along the edge of the board in the upper right hand corner.

Thank you Kevin, When is it desirable to have the hot start feature?

What it does is give a little more power on the starts which in most cases is fine in particular on thicker materials. It can however cause issues on very thin materials or if you are running a small diameter wire such as .023. With the unit you have the start performance is actually very good without the hot start active so disabling it should not be an issue in either case.
