You'll need to locate a reputable local welder repair shop - preferably an authorized Miller facility - and I would expect one would charge a couple hours for a thorough look-over and basic output test. Most have a minimum charge (perhaps 1hr) just to cover paperwork time should something amiss become immediately obvious that determines a repair is warranted.

The welder is in the Cleveland, Ohio area. If I get the engine running, what kind of business would check the unit over to see how well it is working? And what should I expect to pay for that kind of service?

There are a number of factors that play into what a machine is worth with the biggest being region and what someone is willing to pay based on how badly they need/want it. Throw in unknown condition of the engine/welder portions and all bets are off. Even an older running/welding unit that could bring $1500-2000+ in one area may struggle to get $500 in another.

Did the gentleman at the welding shop give you any idea what your Big 40 is worth? I have the same unit, same age, mounted on a trailer. It has always been stored indoors. It does not have a lot of hours on it, but it has not been run since the 1980's, so I have no idea what kind of operating condition it is in. Anyway, I was just wondering what a 1970s era Big 40 is worth. If you have an idea, I would appreciate it if you could pass that info along.

Big 40 trouble
I have a early to mid 70's big 40 with a great redseal continental 4 cyl engine. My trouble is the generator has some burned wires in it . The guy at the welding shop said it would cost more than its worth to fix my generator. So does anyone have one with a bad engine they want to sell or do you want to buy a engine ?
