  • sucker rod welds to pipe

I'm having a pipe rail fence built it looks good so far however I have a concern. I have notice that the fence builder is only welding the sucker rod on the top connecting with the post should that be sufficient or should he weld the bottom side also? I noticed one of the welds had already popped loose. He is using a 110 mig welder. The fencing company that is building it has a good reputation however, I don't think they have done to many of this type of fencing.

If the welds are already breaking, you most likely have an inexperienced guy who doesn't understand the amount of heat and technique required for a good mig weld. I would call the company and show the boss the problem. How thick is the material wall? I would assume a 110 mig welder, while low powered, should be enough for thin wall fence material. Is it galvanized? Did he grind it off before welding?

That sucker rod is hard material, it all will pop off the posts for sure!

If some are popping already, the rest will pop as the seasons change.

I think it refers to the very long piston rod used in oil well pumps.

Don't think 110 will weld it sufficiently, very questionable. <br />
If your going to weld that rod and any hope in it holding. He will need to pre heat, weld wile hot and cool slow. Also in my opinion needs welded 360 deg. That's the only way I'd do it. Other wise like said it will surly break. Smack it with a hammer or sledge and see.

I agree... a 110 volt MIG is WOEFULLY Inadequate for that task..............

110 mig isn't gonna get it done. Better point it out and get it fixed before they get paid and leave.
