    I only do this when I first pic up the torch for the day. After I turn on the gas and purge the line. I don't think sticking the hot bit up by my face is a good idea.

        I've always just tested on scrap, and played with the setting until I'm at just a hair more than the lowest setting that gives me perfect welds. Never cared what the number on the gauge said.

          I think that's probably how most of us do it. If we feel like we need a skosh more gas, give the know a quarter turn.

            I tend to follow the gauge numbers first THEN I eyeball it... bad choice of words.
