  • Diversion 165 Problem "Poped then smoked"

So back in 2014 I created the discussion a problem linked below.
I was able to come up with a work around this problem until today.

For the last two years, I simply powered my fan on my diversion with an outside power source. It has been working great!! until today.

But, I don't think it was my "work around". I simply forgot to turn my fan on today and was welding larger material than normal.

I made about 10 tacks and on the first beed my machine made a noise. (Kind of a POP with some smoke)

I assume that I fried my mother board which is about $750.

Is there any other logical failure that may have occured?
A place to talk about how-to, techniques, troubleshooting, welding processes, welders, plasma cutters or other metalworking tools.

At this point I would probably Phone/Contact Miller and have a TIG tech call you back with advice

They have some great Tech Support folks with intimate knowledge of the machines
I suggested you call them 2 years ago....

.back then it was probably a warrantee issue...Today..??... probably not...

If you can get the smoke back in I'm sure it will be fine.

So now I'm conisdering the best option to replace this unit. Assuming the worst...a mother board will cost $850.

The shop also has a used Syncwave 250 with new gauges and a few other new parts. They are asking $1500 for it without the water cooler.

I typically weld thing aluminum 6061/7005 0.48'~0.07" Thick. Never nothing thicker than 1/8". I weld about 150 hours a year.

I'm a little more than a hobbiest. Would I be better off buying a used Syncwave 250 than fixing the Diversion?

I have a Sync 250 bought it new around 1988 about 1/2 of its life was spent in heavy shop use the rest was as a hobby machine. It has never let me down and is still running great today in my son's fab shop. It welds aluminum as good as any other machine on the market. I would try and get them to throw in the water cooler.

The Sync 250 would be a good option....

a cooler and a 20 series water cooled torch would make it complete............

He said he'd take $1500 with out the cooler. Said the water is cooler alone is worth $2,000. I have no idea if this is reasonable or not. This is at a certified Miller repair location. The water cooler is miller brand.

Can you get the serial number so we can look up the age and version of that SYNC 250...??

could be recent... or 25 years old.... the Syncrowave 250 has been around for a LONG time in many iteraions

Need some advice. I'm driving 5 hours this afternoon to look at a Synrowave 250 to purchase.

                    Serial Number: KF945378

Seller claims it to be in perfect operating condition. The purchase will include.

                    Syncrowave 250
                    foot pedal
                    3 gallon Bernard water cooler
                    1/2 full bottle of argon

possibly have a cart with it.

                    $1800

i will be using this unit to weld lite gauge aluminum and steal.

should do just fine on both thin & thick stuff......amperage range from 5-310 Amps AC/DC

KF945378 would have been built in the second half of 1995....

                        Here is the manual
