I don't know. It's for a project at a pharmaceutical plant. All I know is guy from temp service called and asked if I could weld schedule 40 stainless tig all the way and was I interested in the work. Guess I'll find out when/if I get in to test. Talked to temp guy this morning he said they have my paperwork and I should be called to schedule test any day. I figured they would have called already tho as urgent as the temp guy sounded

Is this test for a specific code,or just a test to get you hired?

We only weld on sch 10 and sch 40, All TIG all 316 stainless. The testing house we use has never said anything about which way we need to run the bead. All our tests are x-ray for our certs.

I shouldn't have a problem doing it in two passes. Just wondered if that was the proper way. I did a stick test at a different company recently and they failed the other guy for weaving the cap even though it was pretty. I know on the sched 80 tig people want 2 stringer cap just unsure of the 40

On my second pass I do a weave pattern and watch the weld pool so I'm sure to go beyond the edge of the 'V' groove just a touch. I dab my rod at the apex of each swing. If you get a steady rhythm going your weld looks consistent and even.

We do that test on sch 40 316 SS. I run 1/16 rod for the root and 3/32 for my second pass/cover. One of my guys likes to use 3/32 for both root and cover. He walks the cup and I weld freehand. In answer to your question we all only run two passes on the sch 40.

    schedule 40 stainless 6g

So I have a guy wanting me to take a 2" schedule 40 stainless test next week. Question being how many passes should I make for the test? I've welded schedule 80 stainless before. And that had 4 passes 1 root 2 hot pass then 2 stringers for cap. I used 1/16 filler on the root and hot pass then 3/32 for the cap. The schedule 40 seems it might be thin enough to run the root then 1 pass with a 3/32 and I could probably fill and cap in one pass. Is that improper? Or should I close the root and use 045 wire and the same number of passes as the schedule 80? What's the proper procedure?
