Clarify your question for me. Do you need to know how the HF arc start works or how it will work when running it off the bobcat? Which HF unit are you planning on getting?<br />

I've never heard of HF arc start for a plasma cutting. Doesn't mean it's not out there, I've just never heard of it. Are you thinking of the pilot arc for the plasma cutter maybe? It's totally not the same thing.

I just got my bobcat and looking for a way to do tig off it using HF, without buying an expensive Tig machine. Saw HF251d-1 for sale and currious to as how thatd work off my machine if at all.

Th BOBCAT does not have the 14pin control connector..... so TIG with the BOBCAT/HF251 combo is a rude arrangement at best

Here is an old thread on it

I have a 251d and used it off my thunderbolt for my first aluminum TIG welder. Crude is right. Industrial for sure. Packs pretty strong HF though, no doubt. It was my plan to later on move it to working off an engine drive, but the trailblazer does not have AC and the bobcat has no remote plug. Go figure. I have since been advised that it would be of much better use to run a tig machine off the genset on the welder instead. I plan to take that advice...came from this forum group too.

If you want to TIG aluminum then the HF arc starter would be a must BUT TIGing aluminum is a little tricky without the advantage of remote amperage control. Have to set the machine hot enough to get a puddle formed quickly but then you have go like crazy to keep from blowing thru because you can't back off the heat on the fly with the Bobcat - without an extra pair of hands at the machine.

If you don't intend to TIG aluminum then forget the HF-251D altogether and just scratch start.
