  • Big Blue 251D fuel leak

    Hey, all,

Last Thursday I bought a 1994 Miller Big Blue 251D with the Deutz diesel engine in it. Motor only has 1148 hours on it, and it started up and ran fine and welded just fine. The machine had been kept indoors, and was in really good shape from what I could tell.

Today, since I didn't know how long the unit had been sitting before I bought it, I siphoned out all the old fuel, replaced it with new fuel, replaced the primary and secondary fuel filters, ran the unit to warm it up, then replaced the motor oil and oil filter.

When I started it up again, there was diesel fuel leaking out from under the engine cover/shroud (part of the Deutz air-cooled diesel engine). The fuel only leaked when the engine was running. I took off the engine cover/shroud and started it up again for 5 seconds to see where it was leaking, and it was leaking from the line indicated in the picture referenced below. I think it's a fuel return line -- it comes off the left-most injector and then goes up toward the tank. The line seems to be covered with some kind of braided material.

Here's a picture with arrows pointing to the line that seems to be leaking:

    My questions are:

    1. Since it didn't leak when I bought the machine, but now leaks after I changed the fuel, fuel filters, oil and oil filter, is there something I could have done to cause this leak?

    2. Is this in fact a fuel return line?

    3. Does anyone know where I could find the part number and where I could buy a replacement line (if a leaking line is what's wrong)?

    Thanks for any help.

I do not think you did any thing .It looks like a return line .Is the return clamped on or pushed on .You mosl likely will be able to pull the line off ,go to auto parts store get replacement

Thanks, Bls Repair. Seems like I need something fairly heat-resistant since it lays against the hot engine...I'll see what the local parts guys have.

        I Agree

Looks like the injector return line.... rubber gets old and cracks.... easy fix.... it is a low pressure line...

your local NAPA should have it...

        if not.... call these guys

        ALSO

PLS post your serial number so we can look at the correct docs

        Engine is PROBABLY a "F3L1011F"

          Thanks, H80N. Yes, it's a F3L-1011.

I tried all the local auto parts stores (NAPA, etc.) and even the local mechanic who repairs diesel trucks and diesel equipment and no luck on finding the right type of line (it has two layers of braided covering). Finally had to drive to a Deutz dealer / diesel injection repair place in East Fumbuck to get the right line.

          I appreciate your help.

Does anybody have access to a Tech Manual for this welder or even a parts diagram for this engine? I hunted the whole Internet, it seems like, and couldn't find anything. It's Miller Stock Number 903162 and S/N KE726607 and the engine serial number is 00031589. I think it was made in 1994. All I could find was the Owners/Operation Manual...

          Thanks again.

Assume you already have the owners manual, but if not its here:

Pretty hard to find Tech Manuals, as you already know all too well. Since this is such an old machine you might be able to talk Miller out of a copy-wouldn't hurt to call and ask. 920-735-4356 is their tech data department.

Free... PDF engine service manual downloads are online.... you probably have to sort through the sites though
