I have a Millermatic Vintage model, 1994 model, Best welder I have ever used. It has a three position wire speed switch, high, low and aluminum. No plug for a spoolgun. What is the purpose of the alum wire speed? Just curious??

It probably puts that machine into overdrive. Running aluminum wire is fast, spray arc fast.

The manual does not say much..... but looks like range selection...see page 11

Right on. Schematic shows this switch directly controls feed motor speed. Wire speed range of adjustment is impacted by the selection of HI or LOW on the welding voltage selector switch, then by the range selector switch, then finally "more finely" by this switch. On low, wirespeed adjustment is the least "touchy"; the range is limited. On FULL, you have a broader range of adjustment, going up to higher maximum. On ALUMINUM, the feed to the motor is max rpm when you turn it all the way up. If you tried to adjust it for lower speeds while on ALUM, the control would likely be very touchy; big changes for very small adjustment of the knob.

Miller went from a three position switch to a two. and made the middle range disappear.
might be the cost of the 3 position went way up and because of the target market they just changed it.
They used to say we could weld aluminum weld with a 10 foot miggun. It sorta works but it depends on the wire size, drive rolls, liner and you can't bend the miggun. Most people that have tried. spend more time clearing the bird nest at the drive than they do welding.

I use a 10' whip with 3/64" 5356 and my mm250 throws it down like a beast. For whatever reason, it's yet to birdsnest. I don't do it all that often, so maybe I just jinxed myself.
