How many weld passes to weld pipe

Depends on the size and schedule of pipe and the position your welding the pipe in. A horizontal weld gets a 5 stringer cover pass with either 3/32 or 1/8 7018 depending on the size pipe, a root and fill passes...again depending on the size and schedule of the pipe. .....a bell hole weld gets a root pass, hot pass, and then fill passes again depending on the size and schedule of the pipe. keep fill passes just below the top of the pipe so both edges of the weld are visible. The bell hole cover pass is one half rod over the edges of the pipe.. Mig I don't know....Last edited by tackit; 06-26-2016, 06:39 PM.

If he hadn't already passed away, I'd think you might have been talking to my father-in-law. Wonderful guy but he just lived to argue such things. I can still see the look of firmness he would have had on his face when asking that question. :-)

You should have asked him how many turns to screw a fitting onto a pipe. It doesn't matter right? LOL...Bob
