    H80N, thanks for the clarification and broadening my thought process on the Teflon tape. I had never considered someone might put Tef on CGA fitting threads where the threads just don't matter for the seal. Thanks for the specificity! we can become blind to what we think is obvious, but may not be so to someone else. Another reason I love the discussions here.

      And as far as plumbers working on gas lines, I had always thought to use the pipe dope...its what we always called it...just some type of liquid pipe sealer as opposed to Teflon tape. Generally, that's what I use unless its a water or air line. Just my habits I suppose.

        I agree-I use the white Teflon paste "pipe dope" on gas lines, but I see a lot of tef tape used, too. They even have special yellow tef tape for gas lines now. I prefer the dope, even on my air fittings.
