  • Is it possible to practice tig welding without argon? Thanks for any help

Here's one of them, is this any good with 140ST?

This is what I've found that caught my attention 5pc for 10 basically... https://www.weldingcity.com/tig-tung...-2.4mm-x7.html

For filler metal 3/32" which one will be good, er70s3 or er70s6 for s6 version just has more oxidizers for dirty steel. is 2lbs be enough for a while.Shop around for the best price with shipping.

Is 309L a good filler metal to weld steel to stainless and even to weld steel to that has a little rust?

    Here's another that I'm looking at: http://www.weldingcity.com/filler-me...free-ship.html

Or could you guys list some out down below.
AWS Spec A5 4 Class E309L-16 Core wire 3/32 2 5mm length 12 300mm Titania coated electrode coating color may be different from picture Typical weld metal properties wt% C

"Is it possible to practice tig welding without argon?"

only if you have helium gas to shield with...otherwise you will burn up the tungsten and destroy the torch

Sounds like you really NEED to read an understand the basics

You cannot weld without some type of shield, period. TIG is some type of inert gas like, Argon & helium. Tigging without it will get you nowhere and will not account for practice, its like practicing swimming in sand.

The sticks you quoted are for stick welding, not TIG. 309L is a good choice though.

For electrodes, get E3 electrodes, they can be used for any metal.
        if there's a welder, there's a way

Back to the question...you can practice as long as your machine is turned off..I guess that means you'll be pretending to weld.....and thats not practicing

                    The answer is NO,
you can however practice feeding the filler wire through your fingers while sitting on the couch watching tv. I did it for a couple months before taking TIG classes and it really helped.

You have time to sit on the couch and watch TV? Shame!

We all had to start somewhere.... and ALL of us asked some pretty strange questions as we were learning

am sure that after some study and much practice... the OP will pick up and learn TIG skills

So... NIFTYWELD... do not give up or worry about any sarcastic comments... those making them were once asking similar questions...

I don't mean to be sarcastic or imply levels of intelligence but 5 minutes of reading about tigging will go a very long way...few hours and a few more practice hours and you'll find that you'll answer your own questions about the basics. I've burned plenty of tungstens, used the wrong ones, used machines not even originally set up for tig and plenty of other dumb things...a little time practicing is better than anything...you'll quickly learn or go broke buying consumables or repairing your rig. I do apologize for my comments but I honestly didn't mean them in put down type manner...you really need to watch someone who knows or read about the process. It's second nature after you get the hang of it
