I think it's pretty good, I think it's a good thing cert to get even if your not going to be a CWI. I took the CWI pre seminar and learned a lot of interesting stuff and everybody talks about how hard the test is, it's tuff but not as bad as everyone says. I dropped out of high school and never made good grades but on my CWI exam I made 2- 87s and 1- 86. I sale welding supplies and I feel like it makes my customers think I know what I'm talking about and my CWI cert got me a night job teaching welding at the local collage, but it helped with my regular job. Take D1.1 and if you really get to thinking about I'll try to give you some tips, you will be glad you did.

Nothing wrong with wanting to improve one's lot but this may be a hard time to break into the inspection field as there are a bunch of CWIs now competing for fewer jobs with the bust in the oil & gas fields.
    Just something to consider.

I would suggest the first code to study would be AWS D1.1. It is a read PIA, and if you can get past that you can get past the rest. I am not a CWI but I had an experience trying to find one to examine alum welds per D1.2. None I got in contact with were familiar with anything other than D1.1. I finally found an engineer to do the examiniations and qualify.
