  • syncrowave 250 setup basics old style machine

    Hello Group,
I have a syncrowave 250 (new to me) with the manual dials and am looking for a Utube or some other method of teaching me the basic settings for doing tig work. It has the water cooled torch and footpedal, I have done some tig welding 20yrs ago for a Community College course on welding. None since then and this is a new type of machine for me. I'm needing to set it up so that I'm successful as I can be to start out. I plan on starting with 1/8" HR angle iron and flat stock as practice. I then want to do aluminum 16ga after I get comfortable with the equipment.
So any suggestions ? Look forward to any and all responses.

Look around on this site & find the owners manual download section. I added the link below. Type in your serial number to get the correct manual. This will tell you what all the dials & switches do & how they should be set.

For starters though set the big handle to "electrode negative" which is dc- for steel tig work or ac for aluminum. High frequency switch should be set to "start" for steel or "continuous" for aluminum. Balance knob, set it to 3ish. Output switch to "remote". Amps should be set about 1 amp per .001" thickness of material. For 1/8" set about 125 amps. Arc force to "off" (this is for stick welding). Post flow about 10 seconds. Amperage control switch to "remote 14" when using a pedal. Crater time to "off" (don't worry about this for now).

Link for manuals (it is in the support area at the top of the main page)

Balance knob goes to 7ish for GTAW. 3ish is for stick.

Griff01 - I must disagree here unless they changed this on later machines. My panel says "ac balance - set to 3 for balanced & dc welding" They even shaded the area around the 3 on the scale. Also this quote from the owners manual "Use control to change the ac output square wave for more cleaning or penetration. Position 3 provides equal cleaning & penetration".

Here is a link to the manual. My Syncro is from 1995, KG serial #.

Your words are correct in reference to your manual but GTAW does not like a "balanced" arc. GTAW likes more penetration/less cleaning. Seven (7) is the preferred initial setting.
