  • Another mig technique question

these kinds of questions are gettin old but I still gotta ask.

    i have a mm251 runnin c25 gas with .035 wire.

how do i vertical weld, does anyone have the settings for this also.
i know its some kind of weave but when i do any kind of vertical weld it just dribbles down the bead, it looks like the tinman took a s*@%^ on it.

any answers or info will be a great help..

If you're going vertical up, the first thing you have to do is run a lower voltage and wirespeed setting then you would in a flat or horz. position.

      Hey Farmboy,
When I work with my son (A.K.A. Little Bulldog) I teach him vert down. He's only 10 and he has a tough time with his hand control. The first pic is of one of his welds and the second is a pic of his weld when I held his hand and slowed him down a bit. We were welding 1/4" angle to 1/2" c.r.. I think the setting was 21.8 and 427 with c25 and .035.
      Good Luck

          Havik,
We try different things to see what works for him. He has put down some real nice beads and he has put down some real stinkers...(I guess we all have). We have a little competition and he loves it when I let him beat me... As far as techniqe he's all over the place. I've shown him a few techniqes and he uses them all... All at the same time! One minute he'll be runnin' NNN's and then 2 seconds later he turnin' CCC. I can't keep him in control. I know one thing when he picks up his stars and strips he's always smiling and the first thing he always says is hey Dad check this one out!!!

Thanks Laurence! It's nice to have someone like my son to spend time with! Trust me he teaches me just as much as I teach him.

                bulldog-

I think that it is GREAT that you are teaching your son how to weld. and the welds look really nice too.........

                but

ANYTHING OVER 1/8* SHOULD BE WELDED UPHILL (PENETRATION)

ANYTHING UNDER 1/8* SHOULD BE WELDED DOWN HILL.....(HEAT INPUT/WARPAGE)

                  Hey Dawg,
Thanks for your input! I tried to show him vert up but it's just to hard for him yet. To be totally honest with you for non-critical welds like the one shown in the pic (It's a small steel rack for the shop)I usually run vert down because it's just so much easier... For the more critical stuff I do use vert up and about 7 or 8 % less amps and about 5% slower wire speed. (Then horz work)
