  • Grinding weld beads

Hi again guys,,got my new MM251 and love it
My question is what are you all using to grind down the weld beads on sheet metal?
What is the best way to grind the sheet metal to ready it for paint?
I am sure some of you have some trade secrets
    Thanks again

I like the flapwheels, but with any grinding on sheet metal move around quite a bit too much heat in one place will create distortion and warpage that just wont go away, larger panels are the worst but I've seen patches in rockers ground too fast and cause distortion. Just take off a thin layer at a pass and make long smooth passes, removing material at an even rate hence heat input will be at the same rate and warpage will be minamized.

    Good luck,

also remember to only remove the weld not the material around it.

I too use the flap wheel disc on a 41/2" grinder. It smooths out welds and does not leave gouge marks in the metal. They come in different grits depending on how much metal you need to remove.

            Flapper Wheels

Any welding supply stores will have flapper wheels for a 4" grinder. Remember you get what you pay for.

Are those orange discs I see on tv, especially american chopper, flapper wheels? Either way, who makes those things?

Does anyone have any hand held methods of cutting sheet metal up to 1/8" thick that work well?

Thos are Walter Enduro flap discs. I use the zirconia ones. They are the best flap disk going. I also find that the zip wheels they make are better than most.

I use the Walter Enduro Flex 7" and they really work great. One thing that everyone should be cautious of when the pads get worn the outside edge gets exposed and it becomes very easy to catch the edge of the plastic on a corner or the edge of a vise or something like that and if it does it can really send ya. I got hit in the chest one time with the backside of my Makita grinder and broke some ribs. Lucky for me I wasn't on a scafolding or something. I'm glad that I didn't get hit with the disk! As always be safe!
