  • inconel mig welding

Alright heres the deal, we just got a job in that has 1/2 plate welded to a 1/4 ring. The part looks like a pie with the outer ring being 1/4 plate and the (what would look like where you cut with knife) 1/2 plate filleted to it. I want to pulse spray this but not sure on what filler, and gas. Im thinking a helium, argon and co2 mix, and .035 wire. Any help from experience would be greatly appreciated.

    dyn88,
I regularly repair some high heat exhaust manifolds for a local disc mfg. co. here. These are boxed shaped on the bottom where they seat and and the wall thickness is approximatley .030" thick on the part that always needs repair. I am tigging these and have to use Inconel #625 due to the mfr's. specification. I am using 100% argon with a 20 second post flow and 90 amps pulsed at 1.5 pps with a 60/40 split.

I'm rambling a bit but my point is that I believe Inconel is pretty specific on it's useage. If you know the parent metal alloy you should be able to match it up pretty easy. You might try J.W. Harris (google search phone #) as they have been very helpful in the past on alloy compatablility.

There is a filler called ERNiCrFe-5 that is used for some MIG but to do it right, you would need to know the base alloy.
Here are some alloys and filler examples:

      alloy 200--filler ERNi-1
      alloy 400--filler ERNiCu-7
      alloy 600--filler ERNiCr-3
There are also G, C-4, B-2 and many other alloys.

There are some 625 alloys used for making Exhaust headers for race cars. Very expensive and are alway tig welded.

      Good luck

I found a spool of .035 inco600 for $700. Now the question is -what gas mix should I use for puse spray mig? One last question- If I do end up tigging this, being non ferous can I use dcsp?
