    The guy I bought my Welder off of (MM250) gave me a Spool of Flux .045 I was told it would be better to start out using Flux .030. As usual the( not first time) welder needs more advice. I haven't yet even started to try until I get all the advice I can. Need Help again!!

    Larger wires can be harder to manipulate when you are first learning. The reason is they require higher amperage, lower feed speeds, and have a higher depostion rate than a smaller wire. My personal opinion is a .030" ER70S-6 wire with a C25 shielding gas would be a better way to start learning the GMAW process. I would stay away from flux core in the beginning. It is nasty, smokey, and there is flux to chip/brush away.

      flux is yucky

      ddefinetly go solid with c-25 you will be able to see the puddle much better giving you beter controle. all the smoke from flux if a bit harder to see through. i started with flux but as soon as i tryed (could aford) solid with c-25 i fell in love and now only use flux if i'm outside in BIG wind.

        Bbo,

        If you do decide to use flux-core first, pull the gas nozzle off of the MIG gun. It lets you see better, and you don't need it if you're running flux-core. When you're done, make sure the holes in the gas diffuser are cleaned out, so you won't losse shielding gas when you switch to solid wire.

          I agree with HAWK 100% and you will progress much faster with this method as opposed to flux core.

            Another question (as if you had nothing else to do) will the 10" Spools work ok on my MM250? I hate to buy 30lbs as I won't live long enough to use that much.

              That's a good idea. I wish I had thought of that back in the day when I thought I needed (could only afford) flux-core.

                Bob,

                The 8" medium sized spools will work just fine. You do need to use the compression spring on the spindle to hold this smaller spool in place. First install the wire spool and then the spring. It is there to keep the thinner size spool from slipping back and forth on the hub assembly.
