  • i need bending info. pt 2

ok, i finally got around to making my new box. this one turned out much better than the original. and i learned much from it.

its .090 3003, 4"x23". bent around a 1" bar. i figured out the measurements well enough to mark it out flat. bolt it in the jig. and bend it so its only 1/16" out of square, one side is 1/16 narrower than the other. this is nothing for this project. and i could bend the second piece i got, to an even better tollerance. but that would be a waist of time. when i made the last bend, it came to a perfect butt. but i had to overlap it, because the metal stretched about 1/8". and so i could go beyond the bend to make it stay.

Did you anneal the Al before bending or just bend it cold? Just curious.

What is it for an upper intake plenum. If so it looks good so far. I do not think 3003 has a hardness like T-6511 so it should not have to be annealed. You gave me some good ideas for making an intake box for a BBC EFI tunnel ram set up I want to do for my jet boat. I also made an intake box (no bending) for my Eaton Blower project. I used 6061 t-6511 so I could not bend it.

            TJS. welcome to the forum

yes, its an intake hat. i made one a few years ago. it turned out pretty good, on the outside. but the inside left something to be desired. so i tried to fix it, and ended up screwing it up. so i figured it would be easier to make another.

maybe this pic can give ya some more ideas. more pics can be found in my "lets see your hot rod" thread.

                    Blown S-10,
I am selling that shear. It is just too big. I am moving my shop to a home garage and I need to get a smaller shear. I am going to make an upper intake plenum for a Big BlocK chevy tunnel ram that I am going to convert to EFI. I think I am going bend the corners like you did with that simple JIG. After I convert it to EFI I am going to TWIN TURBO it and it will be the power for my Nordic Jet boat. This is an ongoing project. I have a ****** LS-6 I have to do some work to as well. Great looking engine compartment by the way.

You could have brought your T-6511 back to the 0 condition by annealing it in the bend zones....but then you wouldn't have those pretty welds to show...nice work.

i wish i had the room for it ! btw, what are you asking for it, and where is it ?

when you are ready to bend. let me know. i will give you some pointers. things are not exactly as they seem when making these bends. thats why its 6x6.1", and not 6x6".
