  • Miller Elite results

I bought the miller elite back in july 04' to replace my broken Speedglass XL(which lasted me about 6 years of most extreme abuse).
I have a few good things to say about the elite: the headband gives you alot of options for ajustment. The stars and stripes(the one I have) is a head turner. The 4 sensors work great, even in very awkword positions. And the batteries are holding well(better than my old speedglass).
But on the downside; my headband broke, so the local vendor placed an order for a warrenty replacement which took over 3 months to get here. After flipping the hood up and down a few times, the knobs work themselfs loose. I don't like the placement of the controls because you go though alot of inner lenses reaching for the controls when you are wearing it. Speaking of lenses, it took over 1 month to get mine because they were on backorder. It dosn't have a power-off option, so grinding causes the lense to trip unless you let it sit for 15 minutes to auto-off.
For the cost of around $250, it's not that bad of a deal. But the next hood I will buy will be from speedglass.

    Off the soapbox I go..

I would blame the warranty issue to the dealer and not miller. My dealer would disassemble a new hood before he would make me wait 3 monthes. I have used the bwe and agreee it would be nicer with those options but my speedglas doesn't have them either so that is no gain or loss. I would like the 4 sensors but my 9000x works great so until it doesn't I'll stick with it.

    Peace,

same problem here, took 3 months for replacement headgear(new one is a little better design) and forever to get the lenses. my only other ***** is it flashes the crap out of me when I use my TA 185, its supposed to be inverter friendly. never had it flash me with the miller HFdialarc at work.

        RadialX,

Try turning the sensitivity higher and see if that stops the flashing by your Thermal TA-185.

        brianfarth,

I use my elite for grinding. Just turn the sensitivity know to its least sensitive setting and grind away. It works fine under most lighting conditions.

As for the head gear issue mine went bad as well. I called Miller direct and had a complete new headgear set up in 3 days. However, mine is still the old style as this happened right as they came on the market.

Auto-on would be a nice improvement, but not a deal killer. I like mine.

I have noticed something. When there are shipping troubles from Miller, like waiting 3 months , I've noticed that it has been with the supplier. All my Miller parts have been shipped with a couple of days. The one time it took longer, I found out that it was Airgas that screwed up. They didn't put the order in for a week, and when it got there three days later, it took a few days to log it in the system and a few more days for them to call me. Viola...three weeks. Just an observation. You may need to hand hold your supplier to make sure they are doing their job right. I'm not saying that this is the case here, but it is possible. Who knows, they may have run out or something.

FWIW, my local Airgas has started stocking Miller lenses and headgear.

Is this headgear breaking a big problem with other users?

I have been saving for this helmet for a while and I would hate to end up purchasing something that falls apart.

            Thanks.

I haven't had any problems with mine, but I don't use it exclusively.

After the new head gear was put in place, I haven't had any issues here either.

                        RockyD:
The slipping headgear problem can be fixed with a drop of fingernail polish on the threads of the side screws. I had trouble with my speedglas when new but it only took one drop on each side and no problem since!

                        Peace,
