  • need some advice on a new welder

    Hi folks ,
I need a new stead for the stable - I am not a pro welder so keep that in mind when you ready my questions.
I race pro stock stock cars do all the work in the shop my self - except I buy my chassis from Howe .I also build hot rods/custom cars . I build the chassis for these cars my self . I have a couple of miller welders a trail blazer and a small wire feed.
I need to buy a new unit I need more power than the little wire feed has and I want to be able to build my own aluminum brackets ect. I also need to be able to produce a pretty looking weld for the custom car stuff I do, even in steel - and that includes the welding up of the chassis . Time is not a problem I know that the tig is a lot slower .( I need 3 welders I know !)
So here is my quetions I know of two good used welders close to me for sale one is a lincoln 355 tig has a miller water cooler and torch 150 amp ? for about 3 grand it also has a small air cool torch.
There also is a almost new miller syno 250 with a foot reo for about 4500 .
what are these two welders like will they do what I need or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new set up - if that is the case what would be best
    Thanks

The used Syncrowave 250 is no deal at all.I just purchased a Syncrowave 250 tigrunner package with 80 cf argon tank and 10 LB filler rod delivered to my door for $ 3659.24 total. The tigrunner comes with running gear, built in water cooler,250 amp water cooled torch and remote control.

Do you really need a 300 amp TIG capacity? If you're planning on spending that kind of money, take a look at a new Dynasty 200DX. 200 amp, but feature loaded, plus it's plenty portable at 45#. You can be welding for $3500.

Another big advantage with the Dynesty is power consumption.I'm not sure of the exact specs but its a lot less than the Syncro. The Syncro draws 77 amps at the rated 250 amp output.Requires 125 amp braker and #6 guage wire.

Thanks guys - will look at the dynasty - what about the welders - I have read several post here talking about the older welders being so good - is there one of these two welders which is a better choice ( if price is not the only thing) Oh what is every ones thoughts on torches - I will have to buy one with a hand trigger -I get into some strange spots and angles to weld so the foot deal is not going to cut it. what's the best choice .
            Thanks

I have a Lincoln Square Wave 355 Tig and have had good luck with it. It has just about every feature you could ask for and has the amps to weld anything out there. It's has 2 drawbacks, one being it's size and the other the amp draw, manual says it needs to be on a 100amp breaker to use maxium output .You need to compare the features.
