i just bought a spec 625, first plasma. if i had known that he owners manual was useless, i would have bought another brand. the output knob has a series of numbers on it. no where in the manual does it reference how to use these settings. example # is the setting for a certain thickness of the metal being cut. there are other postings on the welding boards about this mater help ken

I would look in your manual for standoff/ ipm/thickness/type of metal and amps to set it at.
I cut this 0.057 aluminum at 30 amps at 200 ipm with a .180 standoff. I could not find any settings for mine so I had just had to guess.

This is for Thermal Dynamics chart for the 40 amps SL60 torch while drag cutting 10 gauge. (105 ipm) 16 gauge is 275 ipm.
Just run your machine at 40 amps for the most part.
7 gauge MS is 70 ipm
.250 MS is 39 ipm
This is pretty accurate with my cnc cutting machine. You might be lower or higher with your torch and plasma setup. Watch the arc on the bottom because pretty soon you will be able to tell when you have it right by the kerf/ bevel/ dross. You do not want to go too slow or the arc is hunting for metal to cut.

dulknife,
I have posted this before and I will post it again. If you are genuinely having trouble with your equipment for any reason, call the manufacurers customer service department and if they cannot fix the problem, request they send out a trouble shooter. It has worked for me.
Have patience with NEW equipment, My experience is, nine times out of ten, it is not the machine that is at fault.

It depends on the speed which you want to cut. There is no set setting for thickness. You can cut 16 gauge wide open and run over 400 ipm according to the chart in your manual. If you choose to run slower that those settings, just turn the amps down and run slower. I don't know many people that hand cut 16ga at 400 ipm. You have to find a comfortable setting for your speed. Too much amps at a too low cutting speed will give you a wider cut with more underside dross and wear your consumables faster. It's like your car...more gas, car goes faster...less gas, car goes slower.
